5 Years: Look at How Far We've Come

Five years ago marked one of the On November 5. 2002. Governor Rick Perry defeated Democrat Tony Sanchez by almost 20 points gaining 57.8% of the vote. Republicans won control of the Texas House which led to Rep. Tom Craddick becoming the first Republican Speaker of the Texas House in over 100 years. Republican John Cornyn defeated Democrat Ron Kirk to earn a seat in the United States Senate. Michael Sullivan of the Texas Public Policy Foundation wrote in a that: The fact remains that the margins were so great the majorities were so decisive only a fool could presume conservatives don't have a mandate to govern as conservatives. Many Democrats abandoned the Party and began advocating a cynical attitude that seemed like it would hold on for years. Consultants bemoaned the Party structure for the statewide losses -- a critique that continues to this day in some circles. The media narrative was so overwhelmed by Republican dominance at the polls that Democratic viewpoints became an afterthought on page B14 of the metro section. There were even some Democrats in the Texas House that gave up becoming members of the Speaker's leadership team and willingly working to slash CHIP deregulate tuition and champion every conservative talking point as if they'd found a new religion. Some folks however held out. Some fought. Some Democrats never stopped being a Democrat. They never stopped fighting for what we as Democrats believe in our hearts: that government can be an instrument of good can help the less fortunate and can be an agent of hope and compassion for its people. Over the next few days and weeks we will hear from many of those Democrats who never stopped fighting. Members of our staff will reflect about the work they've done over the past years. Several elected officials will also share their views along with a few consultants who never stopped working to build a Democratic majority. As part of this extended look at how far we've come we're going to ask you -- our online community -- to continue pushing for new change and a better direction. As you read our stories we want you to contribute to the -- as we try and retake the House and really cement the turnaround of the past five years. We'll talk more about that later but for now we encourage all of our readers to think about where they were five years ago and reflect on their experiences working to rebuild a Democratic majority. When you look at the gains in the Texas House when you look at Governor Perry's 39% and when you look at someone like Lieutenant Colonel Rick Noriega challenging Junior Senator Cornyn you have to admit -- we've come a long way in just five years. We're going to talk about how that happened and what the next five years has in store for our state our party and the people of Texas. As I stood in the Hyatt that night watching people take their Sanchez staff badges off and get rid of them. I was as depressed as I had ever been. I considered moving to a "safe" haven somewhere else like Oregon. I decided that would be the coward's way out; why give the bastards the satisfaction of running so much as one of us out the state. There's been a lot of hard work. The Dean campaign turning Travis County back blue turning Dallas County blue (way to go up there y'all) and much more. There's still a lot to do but we've proved to the bastards that we're not going anywhere that it's our state too. I moved from Galveston County to Oregon in the summer of 2000. I do have to say that it was great to move to a state with more progressives and a more active and organized Party. But the Party has plenty of problems here as well. One of our big problems right now is infighting between Dems over primary candidates. It's driving me crazy as that's how things began in many parts of Texas before the Party started falling apart in the late 90s. I wish you guys all the luck. I've tried a few times from up here to help my home county party (my family's still there) but can never get a response from them. It's the same problem I had in Harris County in '96 when I volunteered and volunteered and they'd never give me any info on how I could help. Wish I could help out more. I'd like to see Texas vote Dem again. I just talked to her office and the staffer quoted Rep. Dukes as stating "HillCo is not a Republican PAC--they donated to almost every Democrat." The staffer went on and on about how HillCo supports all Texans blah blah blah. I am sick and tired of her masquerading as a Dem. Shoot--I'll run against her. I'm sure your joining and your posting were purely coincidental. Surely you weren't recruited to only post about this one thing. Two posts.. two attacks on Dukes? Not really into that whole subtle thing are we? Hope you contribute to the repub bashing as you have the Dem bashing. You'll probably have to use your real name if you run..."Grandma" proved that arbitrary made-up pseudonyms won't work. If 70% of your money goes to Republicans you're a Republican PAC. Of the 30% they feel forced to give to Democrats the vast majority of those dollars go to Craddick D's even though Craddick D's are outnumbered by non-Craddick D's in the Texas House almost 4-1. A perfect example reported on this blog a few days ago was the $10,000 Hillco checks that they gave to Dawnna Dukes. Kevin Bailey and Kino Flores just last month. I agree Tx-Ed - Dawnna and her Craddick D cronies need to get beat! It's kind of a shame that while we're talking about galvanizing Democrats and how we've done better to beat Republicans.. we have to have 3 of 4 comments focused on intraparty primary fighting. Now a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen. It was so depressing because the state Democratic Party was just in a shambles and it was impossible to get volunteer work done anywhere in Dallas county it seemed. But some of the races throughout the state turned up some interesting surprises in 2002. Activism generated by the Dean campaign and later on more effective leadership at the County Party office we were able to grow some deep roots in Dallas County last year. It's not easy and we aren't perfect but I think things are definitely looking up. Ah until your party starts putting up strong candidates for statewide office you're not going anywhere. And as for the leg wishful thinking. PS. Oh yeah keep beating up on Dawnna Dukes who is probably one your best reps. What a great strategy. People in her district like her and she does a good job for them. But no like Puente folks like you don't care about how the constituents in these districts feel about their reps. You just want to punish them for one vote. I'm not sure if you read through the comments on our posts or if you just chime in occasionally to tell us how we're always wrong. Either way here's a : I don't believe we should primary (to use that word as a very which is incorrect but seems to be used commonly as a verb) any Democrats. Say I still lived in Austin -- I don't think I have any business going to South Texas and saying. "We need to oust this candidate etc." That's the business of the people in the South Texas community. Craddick tries to replace Republicans who vote for their districts but against the Speaker. Democrats have lost in primaries for voting against their districts regardless of their position with the Speaker. It's you. Cornhusker and your conservative friends that use the Speaker vote as a test vote --- not Democrats. You should try some new talking points. Now a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

The UK Department for Transport is thinking about trying out some special trucks called LHVs which stands for longer heavier vehicles. The trucks usually undergo two trailers on one rig and can carry about 60 percent more traffic than a typical truck with only a 30 percent bring up in weight.
